In May of 2024, I embarked on an exciting journey to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee to work at Dollywood for the summer as a part of the Dollywood College Program.
Some fun information about Dollywood: It is a theme park that began operations on May 3, 1986, and is nestled on 160 acres in the Smoky Mountains in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The park is co-owned by country singer-songwriter Dolly Parton and Herschend Family Entertainment. Dollywood annually hosts approximately three million visitors and is the No. 1 ticketed attraction in Tennessee. Renowned for its commitment to providing unforgettable experiences, Dollywood has become a destination where memories are made and worth repeating.
I had the opportunity to help create unforgettable memories by working in merchandise at the park’s Sweet Shoppe. In this role, I stocked candy, communicated with and helped guests, and collaborated closely with my team. This role gave me firsthand experience with Dollywood's exceptional customer service, southern hospitality, and public relations efforts. I got to witness how every interaction, from helping guests to helping create memorable experiences, which was a part of Dollywood’s broader marketing and public relations strategies, all aimed at making “memories worth repeating."
Living minutes away from Dollywood in Dollywood's partner housing the International Residence Halls made the experience more immersive. Every day brought me new experiences to connect with fellow hosts and visiting guests. Dollywood’s dedication to guest satisfaction was evident by hosts going out of their way to give guests the best experience.
The park’s motto “making memories worth repeating,” is more than just a slogan, it is what hosts aim to succeed to ensure every guest has an unforgettable experience.
My Dollywood experience also allowed me to explore Dollywood and its water park Splash Country. Dollywood hosted summer nights which had fireworks and drone show displays. I enjoyed roller coasters, rides, shows, crafts activities, and enjoyed delicious food.
Overall, my summer working at Dollywood and living in the Smokies gave me an unforgettable experience. I gained valuable skills, made meaningful connections, and enhanced my leadership abilities. Being in a tourism hub where visitors come from all over the US and the world gave me a unique perspective on how destinations market themselves to diverse audiences. This experience provided me with invaluable insights into what makes Dollywood a top-tier destination for fun and family memories.
